Luciola lateralisLuciola lateralis is a common firefly that is distributed throughout the Korean Peninsula, China, and Japan [6]. This species of firefly was the primary insect of research for the development of OLEDs. Light organs of these insects are found on the abdominal segments of male fireflies. Male fireflies have normal and lantern cuticles. Lantern cuticles have a "longitudinal nanostructures" which a complex arrangement on the sagittal plane of the firefly [4].

Luciola laterals live in freshwater aquatic environments such as ponds and creeks connected to adjacent streams. In Korea and Japan where these insects are common, paddy fields are common areas where these fireflies are present [4].
